Tours of the Castle

Although Hertford Castle Gatehouse is currently private offices and the home of Hertford Town Council and therefore not open to the general public, there are opportunities to have a tour.

It is open to the public for tours during Hertford Town Council's Summer Events and weekday tours can be arranged by prior arrangement.

How to book:

Group visits are usually hosted by Hertford Town Council's Sergeants at Mace and volunteer tour guides. Tours normally take about an hour and include the Castle (Robing room, Dungeon, Vault) and the grounds.

Visitors may wish to conclude their tour by visiting the Hertford Town & Tourist Information Centre where they can purchase quality gifts, souvenirs, books and maps.

Visitors to the Castle need to be aware that being a historic building it does not have the benefits of modem access. The tour involves spiral staircases and several flights of stairs. Unfortunately there are no lifts.

There is no public car park at Hertford Castle but visitors can be dropped off at the Castle while the driver parks nearby in St Andrew Street or Gascoyne Way (A414) both within easy walking distance.

Weekday group visits during working hours are not normally charged although donations to the Mayor of Hertford's Appeal Fund will be gratefully received. Commercial visits and group visits at the weekend are asked to make a minimum donation of £30.00.

Group visits can be booked through:

Hertford Town & Tourist Information Centre
10 Market Place.
