Editing your site

Once you have logged in, the Preview tab is selected for you, displaying your Home page as it will look when published. You can click on the site menu to preview other pages. Click on the 'Edit this Page' button (at the top right of each page) to edit the content, or click on the Pages tab to show, hide or add new pages.

The Site Details tab is where you can change the title and email address.
Use the Description and Keywords boxes to enter text that will help search engines find and index your site.

The Design tab is the place to get creative with colours, background images and styles. You can choose a layout (menu at top or at the side, logo to left or right, etc), a menu style, and a colour scheme. Click on Customise to set specific colours, add a background image, or change the font size. If you are comfortable using CSS (cascading style sheets) you can control the look and behaviour of any part of your site using the Override CSS feature.

You can give other people a username and password, so they can edit parts of your site, on the Editors tab. If necessary, you can allow them to edit only certain pages, or certain types of pages.

If you want to allow certain pages on your site to be restricted to members only, add their usernames and passwords on the Members tab.

Adding pages

There is no limit to the number of pages you can have on your site.

To add new pages, click on the Pages tab and then on Add New. Simply choose the page type and give the page a name and click Save, then add content items to your new page. There is no limit to the number of pages
you can add and all new pages will be automatically added to the navigation menus and site map. You can 'indent' pages so that they appear in a dropdown sub-menu rather than on the main menu by clicking on the right-pointing arrow on the far right of the screen under the Pages tab.

There is a range of specialist page type available to use. As well as general pages which can contain any number of items (see below), you can add:
  • Address Books

  • Location Lists

  • Classified Ad pages

  • Image Galleries or Slideshows

  • Message Boards

  • Diary or Calendars

  • Links Lists

  • Site News

  • RSS Feeds from other sites

  • News Feeds from moreover.com

  • Sitemaps

  • HTML pages

  • Contact Forms

  • Product Catalogs

  • Polls

  • Guest Books

Editing pages

You can add any number of items to your pages.

As well as basic Text, Image, and Link items, you can add custom HTML, Image Galleries, Events Calendars, and Contact Forms as elements on your page.

You can also upload entire HTML documents which are seamlessly integrated into your website, or even Office documents (Word, Excel, PDF, etc).

Adding pictures

Adding digital photos to a Neton8 website is easy, but you have to make sure that the picture will be displayed properly. Photos taken with a digital camera are often high-resolution and need to be modified before uploading to your site. We recommend using a graphics editing program such as Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro to increase the compression of your jpeg images and resize them to a smaller display size. In general you should aim to reduce the display size to between 200-600 pixels wide or high, and the file size to 50kb or less.

A free alternative to these programs is IrfanView, a graphic viewer that works with most versions of Windows and is easy for beginners to use.

Another free program is Easy Thumbnails, which is an easy way to make your images smaller in size and adjust quality, so reducing file size.

Or you can use an online tool to resize and compress pictures such as http://www.shrinkpictures.com, or a full-featured online image editor like Splashup.

Publishing your site

When you are happy with your site, click on the Publish tab to create the
live version of your site. The address will be similar to this: http://www.neton8.co.uk/n8/YourBusiness/. Click on the Live tab to view.

Linking to a domain

If you don't already have a domain name, we can register one for you.

Once you do, there are several ways that it can be linked to your Neton8 website. The best method is to set the name servers or DNS records to point to our servers, but if your domain registrar does not allow this, you can use frames-based or standard web forwarding. Talk to us to decide the most practical method, and if you prefer, we can handle all the technical details for you.

Or you can continue to use the (for example) http://www.neton8.co.uk/n8/YourBusiness/ address.
